The Newfoundland and
Labrador Federation of School Councils (NLFSC) congratulates students,
teachers, parents, and school councils for their patience and efforts during
the past few months, and extends best wishes for a happy healthy summer.
“ It’s been a unique and challenging school year,” says NLFSC President Don
Coombs. “Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic students, teachers, and parents were
forced to adjust to a new way of learning. This has not been an easy time for
anyone. Each family had their individual struggles with the closing of schools
and daycares, loss of employment, and the seclusion stemming from social
distancing. Despite this high-stress situation, teaching and learning continued
and we have heard many stories of success. This would not have been possible
without the support, patience and understanding of all.”
NLFSC also commends Brian Warr, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development, as well as Tony Stack CEO of English School District for their guidance.
“Leadership is hard to define, but in times of crisis it is easy to identify,” says Coombs. “The response by Minister Warr and representatives of the English School District to the Coronavirus crisis has been outstanding. The risk of making mistakes is very high during a global pandemic and it takes a tremendous amount of courage to make necessary academic decisions that impact students. The unprecedented nature of this situation meant there was no set direction for them to follow. Despite these daunting circumstances, our leaders acted quickly to put plans in place to support the emotional health of our students and to minimize the disruption to their education.”
NLFSC encourages parents to continue to follow the guidelines set by the provinces Chief Medical Officer, Premier, and Minister of Health.
“We need to remember this experience is new to the entire population and decisions are being made for our safety. We will accomplish this by working together with patience, kindness, and respect. It is important to remain supportive and patient as the Department of Education and School District continues to work on a plan for learning during this unprecedented and uncertain time.”
